William’s Work Experience

When I first joined the Careers Worcestershire Hub, I was a recent Graphic Design graduate looking for work and the opportunity to gain experience in a professional environment. My short-term goals were to explore jobs in sectors that interested me, such as marketing, IT and administration. I also considered roles helping people with mental health conditions like myself, such as through support working and SEND assurance jobs. My long-term goal was to find a career within the creative industry, ideally as a Graphic Designer or Photographer.

To support my journey, I was allocated a Careers Advisor who I met with regularly to discuss possible routes into work. The first thing we worked on was reviewing my CV. As a design student, I had created a more creative-style CV, but I was advised that a traditional format would be more suitable for my current job search. Together, we made changes that helped highlight my skills and experience more effectively.

I was also encouraged to look at apprenticeships, which offered the opportunity to learn while earning. This felt like a good route for me as I had limited experience in a professional environment and could continue developing my skills while earning an income. My Careers Advisor helped point me in the right direction to explore apprenticeship opportunities.

Alongside this, I had regular meetings with Rhys, the Health and Wellbeing Advisor, where I set goals to support my mental and physical health. My Work Coach also helped me explore potential careers within the Civil Service and supported me with writing personal statements.

Due to my interest in marketing and administration, I was given the opportunity to undertake work experience with the Careers Worcestershire team. I attended a Teams meeting with the marketing team, where discussions focused on social media campaigns and future content. Afterwards, I was asked to create some example social media posts that could potentially be used by the service. I also gained experience using Canva, which was completely new to me.

My administrative tasks included inputting customer feedback into Microsoft Forms and completing a range of written tasks. The main reason I took part in the work experience was to gain experience in a professional environment and improve my confidence, particularly when communicating with other people.

When visiting the Hub, I have always found the atmosphere to be relaxed and welcoming. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by friendly staff, which helped create a positive experience. Everyone I worked with, from my Careers Advisor and Health and Wellbeing Advisor to my Work Coach, was helpful, friendly and understanding of what I wanted to achieve.

Overall, I found the service to be very friendly, helpful and understanding.

Thanks,
William
